Enhancing the Professional Self-Concept of Nursing Students: A Qualitative Content Analysis

Yeowon Jeong

Abstract

This study aimed to identify nursing students’ experiences with the interview as a strategy to improve professional self-concept, and determine whether the interview is an effective strategy to enhance it.  Nursing students performed interview with a total of 36 healthcare professionals on a topic related to nursing and completed the open-ended questionnaire about their experience of interview. The open-ended questionnaire was analysed using qualitative content analysis. One main and three sub-themes within the interview were revealed: the interview is an opportunity for experience, understanding, and interaction. Based on the results, interview is a useful strategy for enhancing nursing students’ professional self-concept.
